Research of Interest »»

To complementary mass drug administration (MDA) in successful elimination of lymphatic filariasis. It requires the efficient diagnostic tests to accurately evaluate the current burden of the disease as well as the control measure. The molecular biology research is required to identify the new drug targets which can be used to help or substitute currently available drugs, which have limitations in macroficidal effects and cause adverse drug reactions.

Our research unit’s interest is to perform the researches to support the lymphatic filariasis elimination program from basic researches to advanced and applied researches in molecular biology and immunology. The knowledge will be useful to develop new effector diagnostic method with reasonable cost to apply in community public health, and effectively assess the prevalence of lymphatic filariasis, which is important for lymphatic filariasis elimination strategies. In collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, our surveys in the Thai people, the Myanmar migrant workers, the mosquitoes, and the reservoir host (cat) in the endemic areas provide the data useful for the control program. We have collected various filarial species that are useful for species references. We successfully used the Polymerase chain reaction linked restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) to differentiate various filarial species in our reaction. We are currently interested in the role of antibiotics against Wolbachia  (The endosymbiotic bacteria in filarial parasites in control of lymphatic filariasis, and prevention of pathology. The “Lymphatic Filariasis Research Unit” is currently supported by Chulalongkorn University, in order to continue advanced research work with high quality, produce new and advance knowledge, and is actively produce the new potential researchers in Master’s and Doctor’s degree. The Royal Golden Jubilee grants for Ph.D. students are supported by the Thailand Research Fund.
